at what point is ai (even what we already have in the LLMs) going to be treated like a calculator? or like the fact we dont teach handwriting or cursive or even spelling anymore? isnt it going to be, "sure, use ai to its full extent in doing research, solving problems and writing essays." then we just start teaching how best to prompt an LLM. isnt this completely inevitable? dont get me wrong. it doesnt sit right. but it seems inevitable.
I think this is a plausible outcome, and probably the best case scenario, though one may ask if the loss of penmanship and the ability to do math in your head is actually far worse than it first appears.
I’ve been thinking a lot about AI recently. It makes me a bit queasy. I use it now and then. But it makes me uncomfortable even when it makes tasks like creating multiple- choice quizzes so much easier. I enjoyed your essay. You’ve given me more to think about. I am also concerned with the amount of energy AI consumes, although a friend told me Deepseek eliminates that issue. There is a joke in Deadpool/Wolverine along the lines of “there are no bad actors, just bad costumes.” Perhaps there is no bad AI, just bad users.
